Coach Hire Across Switzerland

Basel Coach Hire for Groups on Both Banks of the Rhine

Basel is generous with coach places and strict about its centre. Parking is free but cannot be reserved, and the core of Grossbasel is closed to motor traffic without a permit. Knowing which of the two your programme touches shapes the day.

The car-free core

The Kernzone of Grossbasel is a pedestrian area behind retractable bollards. A coach that sets down or collects a group inside it for a special trip needs a short-term permit from the Motorfahrzeugkontrolle Basel-Stadt, applied for online. The permit exists only in electronic form, linked to one plate, and the bollards drop when that plate approaches.

Most groups never need it. The canton's map shows set-down points, usually for 30 minutes at most, and coach parking areas with stays of up to 15 hours. Set down close to the sight, then send the coach to a parking area until the pick-up.

Museums and the Münster

Groups visiting the Münster must book an online slot of 15, 30 or 45 minutes, or they are turned away. The Kunstmuseum wants groups booked ahead and has a set-down point on Dufourstrasse beside it. Museum Tinguely has no parking of its own, and its private tours take at most 20 people.

Fondation Beyeler in Riehen has coach spaces at the museum with no time limit. Book group tours a month ahead, and remember it is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Airports for a group arriving in Basel

Stadiums and arenas a coach can reach

  • St. Jakob-Park — Home ground of FC Basel 1893, in the St. Jakob area on the south-eastern edge of the city; 36,000 seats (40,000 seated and standing for concerts). It has its own railway station, tram line 14 (stop "St. Jakob") and bus lines 36, 37 and 47 (stop on Hagnaustrasse on match days). Car parking: 680 spaces in the stadium and 1,465 beside the St. Jakobshalle. No coach parking for visiting groups is published by the club.
  • St. Jakobshalle Basel — Indoor arena for concerts, shows and sport (Swiss Indoors Basel tennis, show jumping) at St. Jakobs-Strasse 390, 4052 Basel; tram 14 and bus 36 stop "St. Jakob" directly in front. Vehicles use Brüglingerstrasse 21 as the navigation address for the St. Jakob car park (open 24 hours, 2.10 m clearance, so not for coaches). No coach parking is published by the arena.

Where a coach can stop in Basel, and other rules

  • EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg (BSL) lies in France; groups from Basel use its Swiss sector, which is about 7 km by road from the Marktplatz along the customs road (Zollfreistrasse / Route douanière), about 15 min in light traffic; Zurich Airport (ZRH) is about 90 km by road from the Marktplatz, about 1 h 15 min in light traffic. Journeys take longer at peak times.
  • EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg (BSL) lies on French soil but has a French sector and a Swiss sector, clearly separated by a customs border. Groups travelling from or to Switzerland use the Swiss sector, reached from Basel on the customs road (Zollfreistrasse / Route douanière) opened in 1952; enter "Flughafen Basel-Mulhouse" in the navigation system for the Swiss sector ("Aéroport Bâle-Mulhouse" leads to the French sector). It is not possible to drive from one sector to the other on the airport site.
  • EuroAirport, Swiss sector: since December 2019 only authorised buses and taxis or vehicles with a special permit may drive up to the departure and arrival area; private cars use the Express-CH car park in front of the terminal for short stays (at most 4 hours). The airport car parks admit only vehicles under 3.5 t, so coaches cannot use them. The airport publishes no separate coach parking, coach registration or height-limit rules; check access for a coach with the airport before travel. Public bus line 50 (BVB) runs from the Swiss-sector forecourt to Basel SBB every 7 to 10 minutes (about 20 minutes).
  • Coach parking in Basel is free of charge but cannot be reserved. The Kanton Basel-Stadt (Mobilität) publishes a map of coach set-down points ("Reisebus-Halteorte", maximum 30 minutes unless stated) and coach parking areas ("Reisebus-Abstellplätze").
  • Official coach set-down points (Halteorte): Petersgraben 1 (3 spaces), Steinenberg 4 (3), Kohlenberg 10 (3), Dufourstrasse (3), Gartenstrasse (three places with 2, 3 and 4 spaces), Jacob Burckhardt-Strasse (1), Elsässerrheinweg (3), Riehenring (2), Mattenstrasse 24 (3) and Schwarzwaldallee 225 (5), each for at most 30 minutes; Uferstrasse (two places with 1 space each, at most 60 minutes).
  • Official coach parking areas (Abstellplätze): Brennerstrasse, 4054 Basel (6 + 3 spaces, at most 15 hours); Bäumlihofstrasse, 4058 Basel (5 spaces, at most 15 hours); Uferstrasse, 4057 Basel (3 spaces, at most 12 hours); in Riehen at the Fondation Beyeler, Baselstrasse 101 (2 + 1 spaces), at the Friedhof Hörnli, Hörnliallee 71 (1 space, 15 hours) and, according to the Gemeinde Riehen, at the Schiessstand, Chrischonaweg 120 (no time limit).
  • The city centre of Grossbasel has a motor-vehicle-free core zone ("Kernzone Innenstadt", Verkehrskonzept Innenstadt) with pedestrian zones. Without a permit, vehicles may enter only for goods delivery, Monday to Saturday 05:00-11:00. Coaches ("Gesellschaftswagen") that pick up or drop off groups for special trips need a short-term access permit (Kurzbewilligung), applied for with the online form of the Motorfahrzeugkontrolle Basel-Stadt; permits are issued electronically only and linked to the licence plate. Companies running regular sightseeing tours by coach on the route Spiegelgasse - Stadthausgasse - Eisengasse - Schifflände - Blumenrain can get a permanent permit for up to 12 months.
  • Retractable bollards control access to the core zone. Those at Freie Strasse, Kasernenstrasse and Spalenberg are in operation; further bollards at Rittergasse and at Fischmarkt / Stadtgasse are planned. The bollards are open during goods-delivery hours; outside them they lower automatically for licence plates with a permit (the e-mailed permit carries a QR code as a back-up).
  • Messe Basel: coach parking for exhibition visitors is reserved in advance through the MCH online form (location sent by e-mail). Museum Tinguely: no parking at the museum; coaches use the city's official coach parking. Fondation Beyeler: coach spaces at Baselstrasse 101.
  • Swiss Indoors Basel (St. Jakobshalle, tennis, late October): parking around the hall is limited and parking in the hall forecourt is forbidden; visitors are asked to follow the orange P+R signs from Pratteln to the Leimgrube and Ruchfeld car parks in the Dreispitz area, with a shuttle to the hall (P+R from Monday 26 to Friday 30 October 2026, 13:00 to midnight).
  • Basler Fasnacht (UNESCO intangible heritage) starts at 04:00 on the Monday after Ash Wednesday with the Morgestraich and ends at 04:00 on the Thursday; the cortège parades run through the city centre on Monday and Wednesday afternoons, and the Guggenmusik bands gather at Messeplatz on Tuesday evening. No coach plan is published. The Basler Herbstmesse (autumn fair, two weeks each autumn) uses seven city squares, including Messeplatz and Petersplatz, and a hall at Messe Basel. Art Basel fills Messe Basel every year in June; the Christmas market is on Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz.
  • Basel SBB (Centralbahnplatz): the main Swiss station, with direct ICE, IC and EC trains to Germany, Austria, Italy, France and the Benelux countries; trains from France arrive at the French station Basel SNCF, directly beside it. The SBB station plan (02/2026) shows a bus station (Busbahnhof) at Meret Oppenheim-Platz; no official coach set-down point is listed on Centralbahnplatz.
  • Basel Badischer Bahnhof (Schwarzwaldallee 200): station of Deutsche Bahn on Swiss soil, near Messe Basel, with long-distance trains to Germany; official coach set-down point at Schwarzwaldallee 225 (5 spaces, 30 minutes).
  • Cabotage: under Article 20 of the EU-Switzerland Land Transport Agreement, a coach operator established in an EU state may not carry passengers between two places in Switzerland. A group journey that starts and ends in Switzerland therefore needs a vehicle from an operator established in Switzerland. Coaches may carry groups across the border in both directions; these occasional services need no authorisation, but the coach carries a journey form (Fahrtenblatt).
  • Road charges: coaches and other buses over 3.5 tonnes pay the flat-rate heavy vehicle fee (pauschale Schwerverkehrsabgabe, PSVA) for every day they are in Switzerland, on all public roads, and need no motorway vignette; foreign-registered coaches pay the PSVA online through the BAZG "Via" portal or app before entering Switzerland. Minibuses and cars up to 3.5 tonnes need the motorway vignette (the e-vignette linked to the number plate, or the sticker) to use motorways and expressways (Autobahnen / autoroutes / autostrade).
  • Speed and driving bans: on motorways and expressways coaches may drive at up to 100 km/h (articulated buses and scheduled buses with standing places excepted); heavy vehicles are otherwise limited to 80 km/h. The Swiss night driving ban (22:00 to 05:00) and the Sunday and public-holiday ban for heavy vehicles do not apply to vehicles carrying passengers.
  • Drivers' hours: coach drivers follow the Swiss ordinance ARV 1, aligned with the EU rules: at most 9 hours of driving a day (10 hours twice a week), a break of at least 45 minutes after 4.5 hours of driving and at least 11 hours of daily rest, recorded by tachograph. Drivers of foreign-registered coaches must keep the same driving, break and rest rules in Switzerland. In domestic traffic, professional drivers of cars and of minibuses with up to 16 seats besides the driver follow ARV 2 instead.
  • Cross-border day trips: a coach based in Switzerland may take a group into a neighbouring country and back. The road rules, charges and any low-emission rules of that country apply on its roads, so the operator checks them before the trip.

Fairs, Art Basel and Fasnacht

For a trade fair, coach parking is reserved per exhibition through the organiser's online form, which asks for the plate and the driver's mobile; the exact place and an access plan come back by e-mail. Spaces are limited; others are offered when the park is full.

Art Basel fills the Messe every June. Basler Fasnacht starts at 04:00 on the Monday after Ash Wednesday and fills the centre for three days. Neither publishes a coach plan, so the operator settles where the coach stops.

Three countries, one rule to know

An hour takes the group to Colmar in Alsace or to Freiburg im Breisgau; the Vitra Campus is 15 minutes and Europa-Park about 1.25 hours. A Swiss coach can take the group across and back. The road rules and low-emission zones of France or Germany then apply, and the operator checks them first.

The reverse is limited. A coach company based in the EU may bring a group to Basel, but it may not carry passengers between two places in Switzerland. A day from Basel to Lucerne and back needs a Swiss operator.

What organisers ask us

Is EuroAirport in Switzerland?

No, it lies in France. Basel groups leave through the Swiss sector, roughly 7 km by the customs road from the Marktplatz. A vehicle cannot drive from one sector to the other on the airport site.

Where does the coach set us down at Basel SBB?

No official set-down point is listed on Centralbahnplatz, so the operator confirms the nearest stop. Basel Badischer Bahnhof has an official one at Schwarzwaldallee 225.

Can we reserve a coach place near the zoo?

No coach place in Basel can be reserved. The zoo has none of its own, but the canton lists a coach parking area on Brennerstrasse nearby.
