Lugano Coach Hire for Groups Visiting Ticino
Lugano lets a coach stop on the lakefront for five minutes and no longer. Set-down is quick, parking is out by the stadium, and the old town is closed to traffic. A group that is ready to step off saves the whole day trouble.
Stop&Go on the lakefront
The signed Stop&Go points allow five minutes. Piazza Manzoni and Piazza Rezzonico, on the lane towards Paradiso, are for set-down and pick-up. Riva Vincenzo Vela, on the lane towards Cassarate, is for set-down only. Choose the pick-up point by the direction the coach will leave in.
From there the group walks into the pedestrian zone around Via Nassa, the cathedral and Piazza della Riforma. Bollards close it outside delivery hours, though hotel guests may be driven in to load and unload luggage.

Where the coach waits
The city's tourist coach park currently has 25 spaces on Via Ciani beside the AIL Arena. Up to 24 hours needs no permit. A replacement near the Lugano-Sud exit has been planned but is not yet in operation, and works at Cornaredo are changing access around Via Ciani. No coach parking can be booked online.
Near the station, coaches may stop for up to an hour on Via Basilea. The station funicular reaches the centre in 92 seconds, which helps a group with bags.
Airports for a group arriving in Lugano
Stadiums and arenas a coach can reach
- AIL Arena (Polo Sportivo e degli Eventi, Cornaredo) — FC Lugano home ground since the 2026/27 season, replacing the Stadio comunale di Cornaredo (1951-2026). Handed over to the City in March 2026; first official match on 5 June 2026; inaugurated at the first home match of the 2026/27 Brack Super League season. 8,093 places for UEFA matches and up to 8,793 for league and national cup matches (with standing sectors); called "Lugano Arena" in UEFA and international competitions. Served by TPL bus lines 4, 6 and 7. The club says parking near the stadium is limited and recommends public transport. The tourist coach parking on Via Giacomo e Filippo Ciani is beside it (see coach notes).
- PalaRaiffeisen (Polo Sportivo e degli Eventi) — New indoor sports hall under construction in the same complex: a main hall for 3,000 spectators at sports events (basketball, volleyball and others) and up to 4,000 for concerts and other events. Stage 1 of the PSE works is due to end at the end of 2026; no opening date is published.
- Cornèr Arena - Pista ghiaccio Resega — HC Lugano ice hockey arena at Resega, opened in 1995 and open all year; also used for other sports events, concerts and fairs. Capacity 6,733, of which 1,850 standing. The P+R Resega (400 car spaces, Via Sonvico 13, Porza) is nearby, close to the exit of the Vedeggio-Cassarate tunnel. No coach parking is published for the arena.

Where a coach can stop in Lugano, and other rules
- Zurich Airport (ZRH) is about 221 km by road from the Piazza della Riforma, about 3 h 15 min in light traffic. Journeys take longer at peak times.
- Milano Malpensa (MXP, Italy) is about 68 km by road from the Piazza della Riforma, about 1 h 15 min in light traffic. It is in Italy, so the journey crosses the Swiss-Italian border.
- Lugano Airport (Agno) has no scheduled airline flights: it is a general and business aviation airport, and its operating concession was renewed for 30 years (press release of 2 October 2026). The international airports used to reach Lugano are Milano Malpensa (MXP), about 60 km from Lugano, and Zürich (ZRH). TILO line S50 runs direct every hour from Malpensa Aeroporto T1 and T2 to Lugano via Varese and Mendrisio (about 1 h 45 min). From Zürich Flughafen trains need at least one change; IC2 and EC trains run direct from Zürich HB to Lugano in about 1 h 55 min.
- Coach set-down in central Lugano (Stop&Go, maximum 5 minutes, signed): Piazza Manzoni and Piazza Rezzonico for set-down and pick-up, and Riva Vincenzo Vela (Riva Vela 4) for set-down only. Piazza Manzoni and Piazza Rezzonico are on the lakefront lane towards Paradiso; Riva Vela is on the lane towards Riva Albertolli and Cassarate.
- Coach parking: the City's tourist coach parking has 25 spaces on Via Giacomo e Filippo Ciani, beside the football pitches of Cornaredo and the AIL Arena (river side), not far from the entrance to the Vedeggio-Cassarate tunnel. Stays of up to 24 hours need no permit; longer stays need a special permit from the Lugano City Police.
- Further coach spaces listed by Lugano Region: Via Basilea 6, near Lugano station (maximum 1 hour; two spaces according to the City); Via Giuseppe Mazzini 11, near Parco Florida (2 spaces, maximum 12 hours); Caslano, 1 space at the end of Via Golf near the Lido (stays over 24 hours need the commune's agreement in advance); Morcote, 2 spaces in the "La Costa" area (maximum 4 hours).
- There is no online booking system for coach parking in Lugano. The City has planned a temporary coach park with 8 spaces for tourist coaches (plus 2 bays for long-distance buses) at the P+R Fornaci in Pazzallo, near the Lugano-Sud motorway exit, to replace Via Ciani, as well as a parking charge for tourist coaches; neither is shown as in operation on the official pages in October 2026.
- Pedestrian zone: Via Nassa, the Cathedral, Piazza della Riforma, Piazza Dante, the Quartiere Maghetti and the surrounding streets are closed to all vehicles except authorised ones. Delivery access is on weekdays 07:00 to 10:00 and on Saturdays 07:00 to 09:00; at other times automatic bollards control access. Coaches set passengers down at the lakefront points and groups walk in. Hotel guests may enter to load and unload luggage.
- Morcote: only coaches under 10 tonnes and no longer than 10 m may drive on the Melide-Morcote cantonal road and the Burò-Morcote road; a special permit for larger coaches must be requested from the Canton at least 7 working days ahead. Coach set-down and pick-up in the "La Costa" area; more coach spaces at Swissminiatur in Melide.
- Monte San Salvatore: coach parking at the valley station in Paradiso on reservation. Swissminiatur (Melide): coach parking next to the park; contact the park before arrival. Monte Brè and Monte Generoso publish car parking only.
- AIL Arena: on match days the club warns that parking near the stadium is limited and recommends public transport (TPL lines 4, 6 and 7). A match ticket is valid on all public transport in Ticino on match day.
- Works at Cornaredo: the old Cornaredo stadium is being dismantled from July 2026 to make way for a 12,000 m² urban park and housing; stage 1 of the Polo Sportivo e degli Eventi ends at the end of 2026. Works on Cornaredo Sud (new athletics track) run from 8 June 2026 to May 2028; the Gerra gravel car park is closed, and part of the area will become new parking along Via Ciani. Expect changes to access and parking on Via Ciani.
- Seasonal: Monte San Salvatore and Swissminiatur close from 9 November 2026 to 12 March 2027; Monte Brè closes from 11 January to 12 February 2027; the lake boats run their full timetable until 18 October 2026 and reduced timetables until 8 November 2026.
- Lugano (main station, on the Gotthard line): IC2 and EC trains direct from Zürich HB (about 1 h 55 min), RE80 from Milano Centrale (about 1 h 15 min) and TILO regional trains, including the S50 to Malpensa. The TPL funicular links the station with Piazza Cioccaro in the centre (92 seconds). Coaches can stop on Via Basilea 6 near the station (maximum 1 hour). The Lugano Region tourist information office is at the station.
- Lugano-Paradiso: TILO regional station about 5 minutes on foot from the Monte San Salvatore funicular. Melide: regional station about 200 m from Swissminiatur. Capolago-Riva San Vitale: regional station and departure point of the Monte Generoso railway.
- Cabotage: under Article 20 of the EU-Switzerland Land Transport Agreement, a coach operator established in an EU state may not carry passengers between two places in Switzerland. A group journey that starts and ends in Switzerland therefore needs a vehicle from an operator established in Switzerland. Coaches may carry groups across the border in both directions; these occasional services need no authorisation, but the coach carries a journey form (Fahrtenblatt).
- Road charges: coaches and other buses over 3.5 tonnes pay the flat-rate heavy vehicle fee (pauschale Schwerverkehrsabgabe, PSVA) for every day they are in Switzerland, on all public roads, and need no motorway vignette; foreign-registered coaches pay the PSVA online through the BAZG "Via" portal or app before entering Switzerland. Minibuses and cars up to 3.5 tonnes need the motorway vignette (the e-vignette linked to the number plate, or the sticker) to use motorways and expressways (Autobahnen / autoroutes / autostrade).
- Speed and driving bans: on motorways and expressways coaches may drive at up to 100 km/h (articulated buses and scheduled buses with standing places excepted); heavy vehicles are otherwise limited to 80 km/h. The Swiss night driving ban (22:00 to 05:00) and the Sunday and public-holiday ban for heavy vehicles do not apply to vehicles carrying passengers.
- Drivers' hours: coach drivers follow the Swiss ordinance ARV 1, aligned with the EU rules: at most 9 hours of driving a day (10 hours twice a week), a break of at least 45 minutes after 4.5 hours of driving and at least 11 hours of daily rest, recorded by tachograph. Drivers of foreign-registered coaches must keep the same driving, break and rest rules in Switzerland. In domestic traffic, professional drivers of cars and of minibuses with up to 16 seats besides the driver follow ARV 2 instead.
- Winter: Switzerland has no general winter-tyre obligation, but a vehicle must be fit for the road conditions and the driver must keep control of it at all times; the Federal Roads Office (ASTRA) recommends winter tyres from October to Easter. Where the sign "Schneeketten obligatorisch" / "chaînes à neige obligatoires" / "Catene per la neve obbligatorie" (sign 2.48) is shown, at least two drive wheels on the same axle must be fitted with snow chains.
- Gotthard: the A2 Gotthard road tunnel (Göschenen to Airolo, about 17 km) is the main road link between central Switzerland and Ticino. It is a single tube with one lane in each direction. ASTRA is building a second tube; when it opens, the existing tube will be closed for refurbishment, and even with two tubes only one lane in each direction will be open. Heavy goods vehicles are metered at the portals (the Tropfenzählersystem, 150 m between lorries).
- Cross-border day trips: a coach based in Switzerland may take a group into a neighbouring country and back. The road rules, charges and any low-emission rules of that country apply on its roads, so the operator checks them before the trip.
Lake villages and summits
Morcote is 20 minutes away, but its roads are closed to coaches over 10 tonnes or longer than 10 m. A larger coach needs a cantonal permit, requested seven working days ahead. Gandria has no coach parking at all, so the usual plan is the boat out and the lakeside path back.
Monte San Salvatore will hold a coach space at its Paradiso valley station if you reserve one, and Swissminiatur in Melide asks coach groups to get in touch first. Both close in winter. Monte Brè and Monte Generoso publish car parking only, and the Generoso railway requires a reservation for groups of 10 or more.
Getting there and out again
No airline flies scheduled services to Agno, Lugano's own airfield. Milano Malpensa is about 1 h 15 min by road, across the Italian border. Zurich Airport is about 3 h 15 min, through the Gotthard road tunnel, one bore with one lane in each direction. A second tube is under construction.
Bellinzona's castles are 30 minutes away, Como 40, Locarno and Ascona about 55, and Milan about 1.5 hours.
What organisers ask us
Can the coach wait longer than five minutes on the lakefront?
No. Stop&Go is for getting on and off only. For a longer wait the coach goes to the coach park and returns for the pick-up.
Can our group join a scheduled lake boat?
Yes, after contacting the boat company's commercial office in advance. Boats may be suspended in bad weather or strong wind, so keep a road plan in reserve.
Is Malpensa a good airport for Lugano?
Often, yes, because it is much closer than Zurich. The route crosses the Swiss-Italian border, so make sure the quote covers the cross-border leg.
