The Executive Sprinter for Small Groups

The Sprinter-style minibus suits a board, a client delegation or a small ski party that wants a better fit-out than a standard minibus. It carries 8 to 16 passengers, with luggage behind the last row.

Car or bus depends on the seats

With seats for no more than eight passengers, the law treats it as a car. Add a ninth passenger seat and it is a bus in law, which means a D1 driver at the wheel. The quote states the seat count, so you know which rules apply.

Professional car work falls under ARV 2: a driver may log 9 hours of driving per working day and 45 over the week, and stops for three quarters of an hour once 4.5 hours are reached. An analogue or digital tachograph keeps the record.

Seats and bags

  • Seats: 8-16 passengers plus the driver
  • Luggage: Rear luggage area behind the last row of seats

On board, and the rules that apply

  • With up to eight passengers it is a car (Personenwagen, at most nine seats including the driver); with more seats it is a Kleinbus or Gesellschaftswagen and the driver needs category D1 (Art. 11 Abs. 2 VTS; Art. 3 VZV)
  • In a car used for professional passenger transport, ARV 2 limits driving to 9 hours between two daily rests and 45 hours a week, with a 45-minute break after 4.5 hours of driving (Art. 7 and 8 ARV 2)
  • Vehicles whose drivers come under ARV 2 must have an analogue or digital tachograph (Art. 100 Abs. 1 Bst. b VTS)
  • There is no general winter-tyre obligation by date in Switzerland: a vehicle must be roadworthy (Art. 29 SVG), and where the signal "Schneeketten obligatorisch" (2.48) is shown, metal snow chains are compulsory on at least two driven wheels of the same axle (Art. 29 SSV)
  • A vehicle up to 3.5 t needs the motorway vignette, as a sticker or as an e-vignette registered to the number plate; it is valid from 1 December of the previous year to 31 January of the following year (Art. 6a, 7a and 8 NSAG)

Winter and motorways

Switzerland fixes no date for winter tyres. The vehicle must be roadworthy, and metal chains go on where the chain sign demands them. For a ski transfer, have the winter equipment confirmed in writing before the day.

Up to 3.5 t, it travels on the motorway vignette, stuck to the windscreen or held electronically against the plate. Each one runs from 1 December of the year before to 31 January of the year after.

Where it fits best

Airport runs for a small delegation, a day tour with a guide, a transfer from Zurich Airport to Engelberg or Grindelwald with skis aboard. With every seat taken, the luggage area behind the last row fills quickly, so count the bags as carefully as the people.

What organisers ask us

Is a Sprinter just a minibus?

In law, yes: the same seat-count rules apply as for any minibus. The difference is the fit-out, which the quote describes.

How many skiers can travel with their gear?

Fewer passengers leave more room behind the last row. For 12 or more skiers with bags, ask whether a larger vehicle suits better.

Does the driver follow the coach rules?

No. In a car, and on domestic trips in any vehicle of up to 16 passenger seats, ARV 2 applies instead of ARV 1.
