Basler Fasnacht 2027: Getting a Group to the Morgestraich
The Basler Fasnacht 2027 begins on Monday 15 February. At 04:00 the inner city switches off its lights for the Morgestraich, and the cliques then own the centre for three days. A coach can bring a group in good time, but it cannot take it into the middle of things.
The three days in brief
The cortège takes Monday afternoon and again Wednesday afternoon: around 10,000 people in costume on a fixed route; the 2026 parades lasted from 13:30 to 18:00. Tuesday belongs to the Kinderfasnacht by day and to the Guggenmusik bands on the Messeplatz by night. The Ändstraich closes the Fasnacht at 04:00 on Thursday 18 February.
After the Monday parade the lanterns go on show on the Münsterplatz until Wednesday. That suits a group that cannot face a night start.

Drop-offs beyond the parade route
Nobody publishes a coach arrangement for the Fasnacht, and Basel Tourism points visitors to public transport. So the operator puts the drop-off and the pick-up beyond the city centre and the parade route, and the group goes in on foot.
At the Morgestraich the crowds are thickest on Barfüsserplatz, Marktplatz, Rümelinsplatz, Falknerstrasse and Freie Strasse. Agree a meeting point away from those streets for the walk back to the coach.
When and where
- 15-17 February 2027: Morgestraich on Monday 15 February 2027 at 04:00; cortège on Monday 15 and Wednesday 17 February (afternoons); Kinderfasnacht on Tuesday 16 February; Ändstraich at 04:00 on Thursday 18 February
- Streets and squares of central Basel (Grossbasel and Kleinbasel); the cortège follows a set route through the city centre
Planning a 04:00 start
Aim to have everyone in town long before 04:00. Zürich Airport to the Marktplatz is roughly 87 km; count on 1 h 10 min with empty roads. From the Swiss sector of EuroAirport it is only about 7 km by the customs road, around 15 minutes.
Driving at that hour is allowed, because the Swiss night ban does not cover passenger vehicles. It does shape the driver's day. A driver who sets off at 02:00 cannot also drive the group all afternoon and evening, so a full Fasnacht Monday may need two drivers.
What organisers ask us
Can the coach wait in the city during the Morgestraich?
Not in the centre. With no published plan, the operator chooses a stop outside it, and the coach parks or leaves until the agreed pick-up time.
Why does the date change every year?
The Fasnacht begins on the Monday after Ash Wednesday, so it moves with Easter. In 2027 that Monday is 15 February.
Our club comes from Germany. Can its own coach bring us?
Yes. Coaches may cross the border with a group in both directions. What a German coach may not do is carry you between two Swiss places, for example from a Zürich hotel to Basel. That leg needs a Swiss-based operator.
